Custom Model A with a 5-inch chop

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1930 Ford Model A hot rod. Completed in 2009, this matte gold custom—complete with five-inch chop and 10-inch channel—was built with the vintage look in mind. Power comes from a vintage Buick “Nailhead” V8 supported by a modern Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. Though true mileage on this build is unknown, this 1930 Ford Model A is offered with receipts, documentation, and a clear Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The exterior of this Model A was coated with POR-15 rust preventive treatment prior to painting. Custom accent pinstriping complements the matte gold paint throughout. A color-matched grille with a custom insert, dual headlights with color-matched buckets, and a tilt-out front windshield with windshield visor give the Model A style and functionality.

Seller touts the steel-filled ribbed roof, 1956 Studebaker Hawk turn signals mounted as taillights, and a roof-mounted fuel filler. The set of gloss black powder-coated Wheelsmith steel wheels with smooth chrome dog dish hub caps are wrapped in Firestone bias-ply tires. Braking is provided by four-wheel manual drums.

The gray cloth seating area was sourced from a 1970s Chevrolet Camaro. Gauges for the coolant temperature, oil pressure and fuel level are mounted in a metal panel in the center of the matte gold and black dashboard, with an 8K-rpm tachometer mounted to the steering column. Additional interior features include a bare steel floor, floor-mounted 5-speed manual shifter, manual windows and chrome four-spoke steering wheel with no power assist. Helping keep everything ticking is a Bare Bonz kit from Ron Francis Wiring.

The rear interior compartment includes a 16-gallon fuel tank.

Power is provided by a 1959 364ci Buick “Nailhead,” which was the standard engine in the LeSabre. Sitting atop the four-barrel carburetor is a matte gray air cleaner (with complementary custom accent pinstriping) surrounded by matching valve covers. Electrical impulses are handled by a PerTronix ignition system in conjunction with Powermaster PowerGen alternator. Tube headers (sans mufflers) give you a playlist that’s music to your ears. Keeping things cool is a custom-built radiator.

The chassis, finished in matte black, was hand-built from box tubing. Features include a dropped I-beam solid front axle with a suicide front spring perch, a reversed Corvair steering box, split wishbones, unequal control arms, TCI adjustable rear coil-over shocks and a solid 7.5-inch 10-bolt GM rear-drive axle with rebuilt 3.42:1 Eaton Positraction.
